You’re not fake. You’re performing a version of yourself you learned would keep you safe.

Maybe you say yes when you mean no.
Maybe you keep everyone happy.
Maybe you explain yourself too much.
Maybe you say “I’m fine” while your body is saying something completely different.

What if that isn’t a personality flaw?

What if it’s an old survival strategy that once helped you belong, but no longer reflects who you are?

In this episode of The Aligned Human Project, Dawn Elgin explores why authenticity isn’t confession. It’s coherence. It’s the ability to stay connected to what is true inside you while consciously choosing how you express it.

Using the framework of Field + Form, Dawn looks at the gap between what we feel internally and what we present externally, and how that gap can affect self-trust, relationships, boundaries, leadership, psychological safety, and our ability to live in alignment.

In this episode, Dawn explores:

  • Why people pleasing and performance often begin as survival strategies
  • How your nervous system learns the “rules” of belonging
  • Why authenticity requires capacity, not just mindset
  • The connection between self-abandonment and self-trust
  • Why boundaries, discernment, and sovereignty are part of authentic living
  • How congruence creates trust in relationships and leadership
  • How the Five Elements can reveal different ways we perform for belonging

Dawn also shares a very personal story about recognizing an old people-pleasing pattern in herself and why moments that feel like “going backward” may actually be invitations to see what is ready to heal and release.

Because the goal isn't to become perfectly authentic.

The goal is congruence.

Less distance between who you are being and what you're expressing.
Less performance. Less self-abandonment.
More presence. More truth. More choice.

And perhaps most importantly, learning that you don't have to tell everyone everything that's happening inside of you. But you can stop lying to yourself about what's happening inside of you.

That is where self-trust begins.
